Kwaito Pioneer Doc Shebeleza Dies at 51
South Africa mourns the loss of kwaito legend Victor Bogopane, famously known as Doc Shebeleza, who passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 51 after a long illness. His family confirmed his death following his hospitalisation in 2024 due to a health scare.
Doc Shebeleza was a pivotal figure in South African music. He rose to fame with his debut album S’Kumfete, released on cassette in 1996. The album featured timeless hits such as Kum’nandi, Ebumnandini, and Ghetsa Ghetsa. He also founded the group Amaskumfete, known for popular tracks like Tsipa Tsipa.
Throughout the 1990s, Shebeleza became a major influence on the kwaito genre, inspiring artists like Mandoza and Mapaputsi. His contribution to South African music earned him widespread respect and admiration.
In later years, Doc Shebeleza focused on giving back to the music community. Through his organisation, Amaha, he worked to uplift fellow artists and support their growth.
His legacy lives on, further cemented by Cassper Nyovest‘s 2014 hit song Doc Shebeleza, which celebrated his iconic status. South Africa remembers him not only as a pioneer but as a symbol of resilience and creativity.
